Deranged – Struck by a Murderous Siege CD Boxed Set review

5 Stars out of 5

I love bands that remain true to their roots. For 25 years and 9 albums, few bands have been as consistently high quality and as sick as Sweden’s Deranged, despite the lineup changes (the only original member is drummer Rikard Wermen). STRUCK BY A MURDEROUS SIEGE, their newest opus, is like a mix of vintage (think BUTCHERED AT BIRTH) and new (think TORTURE) Cannibal Corpse with a dose of Deranged’s classic hooks and precise drumming thrown in. It’s my favorite metal album of the year and it gets better with every listen.

Things start off brilliantly with “The Frail Illusion of Osteology”, a typical mid paced Deranged tune, savage chugging guitars, guttural vocals, punishing drums, if this is your wheelhouse as it is mine, you will be happy! Then things change a bit, “Hello From the Gutters” is slow and grinding, a bit like Cannibal’s “Scourge of Iron” but heavier and uglier. Most of the rest of the album is on the slow / mid paced heavy side, which is a different approach than the usual blistering assault you get from Deranged. “Shivers Down Your Broken Spine” is my favorite track, crushingly heavy and catchy. This one and the creepy “Toy Box Torture Chamber” are pure old school death metal with a killer vibe. Title track is faster and cracks your skull like an aluminum baseball bat. There’s not a weak track on the album and the production is solid. Vocalist Anders Johannson is impressive with his low (but understandable) growl and high shriek, this is his first full length Deranged album and his approach is similar to former vocalists Calle Faldt and Martin Schonherr. Guitars are good with technical solos at times, but for the most part this album is a beatdown.

The CD boxed set version of STRUCK BY A MURDEROUS SIEGE comes with the POSTMORTEM RITUALS disc, a collection of Deranged’s early demos and EP’s that have been hard to come by. This stuff is rawer, nastier, and heavier than the material on the new album. Some songs have intros which gives things a Mortician / horror type feel.  Original vocalist Per Gyllenback sounds like a rabid dog here, not quite at the level he would get to on the legendary RATED X but still pretty savage. If you like old demos and raw shit, this is for you. I am huge fan of Per’s work, so I am delighted to own this. Boxed set also comes with a patch and a STRUCK BY A MURDEROUS SIEGE poster. Everything is housed in a sturdy cardboard box, discs are separate digipacks. Would have been nicer if they were jewel cases, but this is fine. The POSTMORTEN RITUALS artwork is like graphic novel snuff film kind of stuff, very cool. Some band history is included in the booklet and you can see which EP or demo each song appeared on. Best songs are “The Confessions of a Necrophile”, “Orgy of Infanticide Exposed Corpses”,  “Raised on Human Sin”, “Razor Divine”, and “Robber of Life”. Deranged always likes to put their spin on classic metal and rock tunes, so there are also covers of “Cold Gin” (Kiss), “In League With Satan” (Venom), and “Some Kinda Hate” (The Misfits) included on this disc.

STRUCK BY A MURDEROUS SIEGE is the best metal album of the year. The limited edition Boxed set version is awesome and is definitely worth the $30. STRUCK BY A MURDEROUS SIEGE is available in various formats. POSTMORTEM RITUALS is only available as part of this CD boxed set or separately on vinyl. Highly recommended. Get on this right now!
